OPPO launches first phone with Dual Selfie Camera for Rs 30,990/- in India

It was in 2014 when we witnessed a plethora of devices focused on Selfies, it was then we reviewed devices with greater than 5 MP front camera. Just a day before Gionee launched A1 which is again a selfie oriented smartphone, Vivo have also launched another couple of months back which means smartphone companies see a lot of potential in this segment and their decision is also backed by the research done on the topic.
In last two years the industry has moved at a high pace and we have seen many innovations in specs as well as the technology overall including the camera in a smartphone. Recently every other brand launched one or more than one smartphone sporting Dual cameras at rear, OPPO having positioned itself as a Camera focused brand in past 3 years, we were expecting a flagship from OPPO carrying dual camera setup. OPPO did as expected but inspite of being late in the Dual Camera race the brand turned up as a leader as it launched first phone OPPO F3 Plus with Dual Selfie Camera on the front.

OPPO F3 Plus Launch
Deepika Padukone, Mr. Sky Li and Dabbu Ratnani on launch of OPPO F3 Plus
The Cameras:

The Dual Selfie cameras of OPPO F3 Plus are for specific scenarios which are- "One for Selfie and another one for Group Selfie". The camera software automatically recognizes if there are more than 3 people posing for the Selfie and changes its mode to group selfie to work with a larger view area. The 120 degree wide angle, 6P front camera gives 105% larger field of view, than a regular camera. The other front camera with 16 MP resolution, 1/3.1-inch sensor and a large f/2.0 aperture will inherit the advancement seen in previous Selfie Expert phones by Oppo like high dynamic range, vivid depth and minimized noise.

While the rear camera offers high-quality photography performance with fast focusing speed, noise reduction and advanced low-light performance. The 16-megapixel rear camera is powered by a brand-new 1/2.8-inch IMX398 sensor. This sensor is jointly developed by OPPO and Sony, which features Dual PDAF – dual phase detection autofocus technology. This new technology doubles the sensor’s pixel array area where the photodiodes are embedded, necessary for phase detection autofocus. This makes for 40 percent faster focusing speeds even in low light. Paired with the large f/1.7 aperture, the resulting images are clear and breathtaking.

Other Specifications:

The OPPO F3 Plus comes with a 4000 mAh strong battery with proprietary VOOC Flash charge technology which is claimed to provide 2 hours of Talktime in just 5 minutes of recharge. The 6-inch FHD Screen, 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen features a pre-applied protective screen coating. The F3 Plus is powered by an octa-core processor – the Qualcomm MSM8976 Pro, 4GB RAM, 64 GB ROM backed by the ColorOS 3.0 with Avast scanner.

OPPO is one such company with a proven track record of producing one of the finest quality selfie focused /camera centric smartphones in market. In its continued effort to listen voice of customers and understand the usage pattern amongst Indian consumers, OPPO recently conducted a survey with the leading market research company Nielsen, on The Selfie Usage Patterns amongst the Indian consumers, to deep dive into the unique patterns, characteristics, challenges and their definition of a ‘perfect selfie’ .

An infographic is compiled based upon the research done by Nielsen for OPPO India. All findings are based on Online Research in Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin and Kolkata in February 2017 among 1001 consumers who purchased a smart phone after Year 2014 and took selfie at least once a week.

Infographic

Below are some of the interesting facts extracted from above infographic.

  •  Out of 10 selfies taken, 6 are group selfies with two or more people
  • 89% of consumers are more willing to take selfies when with family and friends!
  • 96% of consumers take more than one selfie every time to get a perfect one

  • 66% claim that the biggest issue they face while taking a selfie is the difficulty in fitting all people in one frame! This directly correlates to the fact that a wider angle camera is going to be the future of perfect group selfies – a feature that most Indian consumers are demanding in their smartphone cameras.

Decoding OPPO's upcoming Breakthrough smartphone photography technology '5X'

OPPO Mobiles is now one of the leading handset maker company in China as well as India, its world's 4th largest selling brand. OPPO has established itself as a global player and its innovations have surely grabbed the attention of users and critics alike.

True to its campaign 'OPPO Camera Phones' spirit, OPPO is set to unveil its next breakthrough in smartphone photography code named project '5X'.

    OPPO 5X project
Speaking about the technology, Mr. Sky Li, VP, OPPO, MD of International Mobile Business & President of OPPO India, said, “OPPO’s relentless pursuit of perfection without compromise has given birth to a remarkable technological breakthrough that will change how the world perceives smartphone photography.”

Sky added, “This remarkable achievement is the result of an extensive, year-long R&D process, combined with OPPO’s unparalleled expertise in smartphone imaging technology. We chose MWC to unveil the ‘5x’ technology with the belief that we can inspire the industry to aim higher, and continue to create pioneering products that give amazing experiences to consumers.”

OPPO is well known for its premium build smartphones with a strong emphasis on Camera of the phone, the name '5X' suggests that it can be related to the optical zoom capability of a phone. We have seen ASUS Zenfone Zoom with '3X' optical zoom. Extending that to '5X' will be interesting to see. Our speculations seems to be in right direction as the image for the event which is part of the official press release states 'So close you can feel it'. This further confirms that OPPO's next breakthrough project has something to do with the zoom capability of the smartphone.

Going by example ASUS Zenfone Zoom we now know that its pretty difficult to fit a complex lens mechanism in smartphones of today's era. On the other hand OPPO is well known for its well built slim profile smartphones. Now Is OPPO working on a better zoom enabled smartphone? May be that's what we can infer from whatever information we have as of now, but it would be interesting to see if they compromise on the form factor of the phone to that and if yes upto what extent. So if you are nearby you can experience it first hand on Feb 27, 2017 in OPPO’s booth at MWC is D31 in Hall 3, if not than don't be disappointed we are here to bring all the news to you just keep watching this space.

OPPO F1 Plus sales averages one sale per 1.1 second with global sale of 7 million units globally

OPPO recently announced that its latest device the OPPO F1 Plus aka the selfie expert sales has touched 7 million mark globally, which converts to one sale per 1.1 second as per the company. So far this year has been a very good one for OPPO, a major milestone was achieved when it was ranked at number 4 globally in list of top 5 smartphone vendors, the brand has been the best performer in first quarter of 2016.

(To read about success journey of OPPO and challenges ahead click here)

    OPPO Test Process

Mr Sky Li, Sky Li, OPPO Global VP, MD of International Mobile Business and President of OPPO India, said, “We are very excited with the performance of OPPO F1 Plus. Our focus on camera technology and photography-focused F series has resulted in excellent results for the brand -  first with OPPO F1 becoming the best-selling model and now OPPO F1 Plus recording great sales. The acceptance from the consumers has been great and we believe that the reason behind this is the brand’s focus on taking consumer feedback seriously. We listen to users, and bring them meticulously designed, top-quality products that they’ll truly love. That’s what’s brought us this far and what will continue to drive us going forward.”

F1 Plus Soars on Quality and Innovation
OPPO is committed to both groundbreaking product design and industry-leading quality, which has propelled the F1 Plus’ success. On the design front, OPPO’s VOOC Flash Charge technology has been one of its most celebrated advances. OPPO also announced that by the end of June, global users of VOOC-enabled devices will reach 30 million.
VOOC’s industry-leading charging speeds are well-known, but an equally important advantage lies in the fact that it can achieve these speeds while preserving the longevity of the battery.

Industry standards stipulate that, after 500 charge cycles, a battery should still have 80% of its original capacity. The F1 Plus maintains this capacity through a full 900 cycles, making it 1.8 times stronger than the industry standard, on top of providing breakneck charging speeds.

OPPO spares no effort or expense in the expansive testing regime that its products undergo before reaching market. From the arrival of components at the factory to the final production stage, OPPO devices like the F1 Plus undergo 390 quality assurance tests, including four full trial production runs.
Among these tests are ones that are exclusive to OPPO, specially designed to take into account every last detail of the end user experience. As an example, OPPO’s unique procedure for testing one small but essential aspect of the F1 Plus: the micro-USB charging port.
OPPO realized that, with some competitor phones, users can inadvertently damage the inside of the charging port by inserting the charging cable at odd angles or exerting unusual pressure. Although it’s an unlikely occurrence, the consequences to the user can be critical.
To ensure that OPPO devices never experience this type of damage, they undergo a strict test: A charging cable is inserted into the port and then jerked in four directions, up, down, left and right, using 3 kilograms of pressure. A charging port is only allowed to advance to the production stage if it can undergo this harsh treatment a full 5,000 times without losing any functionality.

The rise of OPPO Mobiles to Top 5 smartphones brand globally and challenges ahead

Recently IDC reported that OPPO and Vivo are the new smartphone brands on Top 5 list of Global smartphone brands ousting Lenovo and Xiaomi from the list. This means a lot to any vendor who is in this highly competitive and dynamic market. The Lenovo when first entered the list, majority of the credit was given to its Motorola acquisition but the brand lost the edge very soon and is out of the honored list, which reminds us that nothing is permanent in this industry. We have seen the rise and fall of the brands like Nokia and Sony. We have seen dynamics changing the market every now and then. We will be discussing these factors that led to the rise of OPPO from just another Chinese smartphone brand to one of Top 5 global brands in industry.

    OPPO Mobiles
    OPPO Mobiles

    Innovation:

Didn't we tell you earlier that OPPO is a brand to look upon when the revolutionary OPPO N1 was first announced OPPO N1 the first smartphone to have a 206 degree rotating camera, this made us realize that you necessarily don't need two cameras in one smartphone when you have to use only one at a time. After that many innovative design and features have been implemented in OPPO Mobiles , be it the thinnest smartphone OPPO R5 or the OPPO N3 which came with an automated rotating camera. The VOOC fast charge was something which helped a lot in healing the Achilles heel of Android Smartphones i.e. the battery issue.

    Premium Quality and Build Design:

This is something which OPPO has maintained in all its smartphones even the lower priced ones such as the Mirror 3 or Joy 5. The phones from OPPO speaks loud and clear about the philosophy followed in OPPO. Many a times you might complain that the designs are copied/inspired from Apple but you can't deny the build quality or seamless experience for the same. Of course you can find many similarities in these designs but I have rarely seen any other brand making such sleek and light phones , easy on grip and feel nice to use.

    The Color OS:

That's what matter the most for many people out there, how you utilize the capability of the hardware you are providing or what's the extent you tweak the Android OS , is it really helping the end user or you are just adding some bloatware to earn some more money from your partners. For me I am a great fan of Color OS specially Color OS 2.0 . To give you an Idea I have around 150+ SMS lying unread in my ASUS Zenfone because in notification I can read that it is a promotional message which is not required to open, however in Color OS I had the flexibility to delete such messages right when the message arrived as it gives me option to either delete or reply there itself. Gesture based actions are another good example of some useful customization. The OPPO smartphones also comes with no or a very few third party apps which you will not use. The battery backup of phones is generally good which points to well optimized customization made.

    Associations:

OPPO as a brand has done a great job in finding partners to promote its smartphone, be it ICC world T20 Cricket championship or partnering with FC Barcelona. Association with Bollywood stars Hrithik Roshan and show like Big Boss has made the brand a house hold name and people can now connect to that when they choose to buy a smartphone from the brand.

    OPPO offline stores
    OPPO offline stores

Offline Sales is not dead yet:

When OPPO and Vivo made it to Top 5 they replaced Xiaomi and Lenovo. Both the later brands known for aggressive online marketing and sales. Xiaomi specifically relies on Flash sales mode which worked wonders in initial years but this model is becoming mature now given the options available in market no one wants to wait for one complete week only to return empty handed from website which is supposed to simplify and expedite the shopping experience.

While Online presence is demand of current times, offline sales are not yet dead infact the opportunities are vast with enormous potential. OPPO and Vivo has proved it for one and all. OPPO has invested a lot in their offline channels, I have seen markets with mobile shops all green in colors, cutouts of Hrithik Roshan and Sonam placed outside for photo shoot for the fans. OPPO runs many schemes on these stores from free gifts to discount offers. The retailers are trained with the features of smartphones and invited also for launch events. The perks on higher sales numbers are definitely high to push retailers sell the OPPO devices on priority than other brands.

    Challenges Ahead:

While all other factors were there for OPPO right from its first device, the last one i.e. offline sales channels has contributed lately and largely to the success of OPPO smartphones. But this is not the time to sit back and relax for OPPO the dynamics here changes in seconds, one new brand with some high specifications and low price all your previous plans needs to get revised. We always believed in OPPO's high quality standard but at the same time if you don't give the right specifications for the right price ( as per market trends) you loose the first battle then and there. OPPO needs to work a lot and harder on its pricing strategy. It may come from their manufacturing process, to apply Lean methodologies, apply DOTWIMP, Six Sigma or whatever it takes just focus on the right specification and price combination while keeping up the quality work and this is the real challenge to keep the momentum growing.

Full charge in 15 minutes with Super VOOC Flash Charge and smart sensor based image stabilization tech announced by OPPO at MWC 2016

Chinese smartphone maker OPPO which is now globally known for its innovations and superior build quality has announced two new innovations in MWC 2016, which is going on currently in Barcelona.

OPPO smartphones are well known for innovations such as swivel camera, auto rotating swivel camera and VOOC Fast charging. Keeping the innovation fire alive OPPO has announced two new technologies in MWC 2016 one is its Super VOOC Flash Charge and other is using smart sensors for image stabilization.

OPPO announces Super VOOC Flash Charge at MWC 2016

Super VOOC Flash Charge: Giving a full charge in 15 minutes

OPPO's proprietary VOOC which takes on Quick Charge from Qualcomm is improved with the latest version dubbed as Super VOOC Flash charge which claims to charge your smartphone upto 45% in just 5 minutes, which also means that full charge of phone can be achieved in just 15 minutes.
Super VOOC uses 5V low voltage pulse-change algorithm which ensures low temperature charge which makes it safe for the battery. The new algorithm needs to be paired with new hardware which includes customized super battery, new adapter, cable and connector all of which is said to be made by Military grade materials. For comparison previous version of VOOC provided 2 hours of talktime when charged for 5 minutes, however with the latest Super VOOC flash charging user gets 10 hours of talktime when charging for 10 minutes. The company claims that the new technology can fully charge a 2500 mAh battery in just 15 minutes.

SmartSensor Image Stabilization: The first ever sensor-based, pixel-level optical image stabilizer

OPPO also announced  a solution to industry wide problem of image stabilization in mobile cameras, provided that smartphone cameras can be deal breaker in current scenario where mobile photography is very common in every part of the world. OPPO's solution is based on Micro-electro-Mechanical system (MEMS) , it is world's first sensor based solution for smartphones as well as smallest optical image stabilizer of any kind in the world. So, far Optical image stabilization is the only solution implemented for smartphones.

OPPO claims that current array of solutions are not perfect and can help vibrations on two axes of motion only which are the pitch axis and yaw axis, however the most common unwanted shaking during photography takes place on the roll axis.
SmartSensor solves this problem, allowing for image stabilization on three axes, pitch, yaw and the all-important roll. Making split-second adjustments with its comb-shaped monocrystalline silicon MEMS, SmartSensor achieves full three-axis image stabilization in a mere 15 milliseconds.

At the same time, SmartSensor uses a voltage-driven sensor, reducing power consumption to as low as 10 milliwatts, 50 times less than the power consumption of lens-based solutions.Lens-based systems, with their increased power consumption, can quickly heat up the module, affecting image quality, especially during extended photo shoots. But the low power consumption of the fine-tuned MEMS keeps temperatures low and preserves image quality even in long shooting sessions.

Meanwhile, whereas lens-based image stabilizers generally have a precion of between 3 and 5 μm, SmartSensor remains precise to a vibration of just 0.3μm. The size of a pixel is usually larger than 1 μm, meaning that SmartSensor is the world’s first pixel-level image stabilize.

With SmartSensor, OPPO smartphones become like pocket-sized SLR cameras, able to capture life’s beautiful moments in breathtaking detail. Even when lighting conditions aren’t ideal, such as at a party or concert, SmartSensor ensures clear and bright images by allowing a longer exposure time.

OPPO launches camera-centric smartphone F1 - "Selfie Expert" in India for Rs 15,990/-

OPPO India launched its first smartphone for the year 2016, in a grand event held in Mumbai. As suggested by teasers released earlier by the company, latest launch OPPO F1 is a camera-centric phone which resembles most closely to OPPO R7lite. The device is aptly priced for Rs15990 and houses superior spec elements under the hood than OPPO R7lite. OPPO comes with a 30 days replacement guaranty and 24 months warranty as well.

    OPPO F1
As we have always said OPPO delivers good quality build and design phone with excellent camera on board, F1 doesn't disappoint either and I personally don't think that they had to market a phone with the tag as "Selfie-Expert" , reason being Its a well known fact that their devices already houses one of the best camera sensors and image processing technology.

F1 runs on an Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 series Octa-core processer, coupled with 3 GB of RAM. On storage side the device comes with 16 GB internal memory which can be further expanded upto 128 GB via use of micro-SD card. F1 sports a 5 inch Full HD display. The phone runs on Color OS 2.1 which is based upon Android Lollipop.

The highlight for the phone however is its , front camera the reason why it is dubbed as "Selfie-Expert". The F1 comes with a 8MP front facing camera with a wide F/2.0 aperture lens and 1/4-inch sensor. The hardware is matched by OPPO's proprietary Pure Image 2.0+ photography platform offering OPPO's Beautify 3.0 feature. F1 also supports OPPO's patented screen flash technology which makes phone capable of taking selfies in low-light conditions. Further enhancing the selfie features the camera also supports hand gestures and spoken commands.

On Rear F1 features a 13MP rear camera with ISOCELL sensor, OPPO claims its phase detection auto focus (PDAF) has focus time of just 0.1 seconds, the anti-shake optimization feature enables the camera to automatically select the clearest image from the buffer of image data.

At the same event, the company also announced a higher specification version of the device dubbed as F1 plus , which will be coming April later this year. F1 plus will come with a 5.5 inch screen and have 4 GB RAM for faster processing and multitasking. The device is said to have even more sophisticated camera performance and will be priced at Rs 26,990/- in Indian market.

OPPO R7Lite Review : Premium build and design with an excellent camera

OPPO launched its flagship product OPPO R7 Plus last year and along with that we had a lighter version of the device named OPPO R7 lite. Needless to say OPPO R7 lite is stripped down version of OPPO R7 Plus which doesn't come with a finger print sensor, and have slightly low specifications when compared to the later. The device is priced accordingly in sub 20,000 INR segment in India which is highly competitive and crowded segment. So, does the phone lives up to the expectations let's found out.

    Build and design: 8/10

OPPO R7 lite carries tradition of premium build and design from OPPO albeit the device is priced in lower segment than its predecessors. R7 lite sports uni-body metal design and has very sleek appearance while the phone is not in race of slimmest smartphone but still it is definitely one the slimmest phones around. On front most of the space is covered up by 5 inch HD display. On top there is an earpiece, front camera and other sensors. Bottom of the screen has three capacitive touch button for multitasking/options, home and back placed left to right respectively.

    OPPO R7 Lite

    OPPO R7 Lite

Talk about rear, we have camera unit on left corner with a flash placed just below it. In the upper middle section of the phone OPPO branding is engraved in metal and has a shiny metallic finish. Right bottom corner of the phone has a speaker grill. The top edge houses a 3.5 mm jack for ear phone and bottom edge has a micro USB slot in middle and a mic just side of it. Metallic power button is placed on the left side of the phone and volume rockers on the right side.
No curve on the edges and slim metallic design makes it slightly uncomfortable to hold as one feels as it will slip right through the hands but after few days of usage you will get used to it. Thanks to the minimalistic size of the device which makes single hand operation easier.

    Camera: 9/10

OPPO phones are best known for their premium design and excellent camera. Without any doubt R7 lite also houses a great camera unit. 13 MP rear camera is accompanied with flash light. Camera UI is simple to use and is very responsive. There are few basic modes which are pre-installed such as Ultra-HD, panorama, HDR, Night mode etc. However there are many other options which can be installed as per your required from within the application itself. We liked this sort of flexibility and the modes work really well. Below are few shots taken from the camera for reference. On front there is an 8 MP camera which is optimized to take wide angle selfies. For selfie lovers this camera is surely a delight.

    Performance: 8/10

R7 lite is definitely not a power packed smartphone with top end specifications. The phone is powered by 1.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset coupled with 2 GB RAM over the hood the phone runs on Color OS 2.1.0 based on Android Lollipop. Those who are familiar with Color OS would be knowing that it doesn't come with an app launcher and all applications can be accessed just by sliding the screens from home screen.

We didn't observed any lag or performance issues while our normal usage, however while playing heavy games the phone does heats up a bit but for most people it should be acceptable. The UI is extremely simple to use. There are no bloatware preinstalled on the phone which means your resources are not used by any unwanted applications.

In my normal usage I found battery backup to be excellent though it is only 2320 mAh  on paper. The phone has OPPO's VOOC charging implemented hence the charge time is very fast.

    Verdict:

At this price range we think it is a bit over priced as Moto X play which comes with a better spec sheet and user experience, is also priced around same amount. So, if you want high end specifications packed smartphone for your price then it is not for you. However, if you are looking for good performance with premium build and design then OPPO R7 lite is a smart choice taking into consideration its superior camera and simple User Interface.
