Rendezvous with Mi4: Features, Specification and Review

We know its more than a year since the device under review was launched, but as its said better late than never. I recently got to spend few days with Mi 4 being my primary phone and this post is all about the experience I had with the device during this time.

Xiaomi as you know is largest smartphone vendor in China and lately has shaken the presence of smartphone companies of all sort from Apple to Micromax all players felt the heat and competition got more tough in already saturated Smartphone market when Xiaomi entered Indian Market.

About Mi4:

Mi4 is one of the flagship devices from the company and housed few of most powerful hardware components of the time, to add cherry on the cake the device is priced less than a third of what we would have to pay for a flagship device from Samsung or Apple. Specifications wise the phone houses a powerful quad core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5 GHz coupled with a 3 GB RAM which provides a smooth experience in day to day use.

Speaking of camera, Mi 4 comes sports a Sony make 13 MP rear camera accompanied by a LED Flash, on front there is a 8 MP camera. The smartphone comes with a 16 GB internal storage which can't be expanded. Mi 4 can hold only single Micro Sim card. The phone has connectivity options such as WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G, however it lacks 4G and NFC which can be a deal breaker for many.

User Experience:

The phone runs on MIUI 6 which is based on Android 4.4 Kitkat. MIUI seems to be oriented for Chinese markets as even after selecting primary language as English we could still see many applications with Chinese names. As for a regular Android user I felt strange when there was no Google application was pre installed, not even Google Play. After a bit of search it turned out that you need to first install Google installer from Mi App store using which all Google applications can be downloaded and installed. Another thing which I am not used as an Android User from past 5 years on atleast 8 different phones was absence of an app drawer. Well it depends on personal preference but It took a lot of time for me to get used to it. All applications are present on you home screen itself and for someone like me it can be bit difficult to organize applications as we can do in other Android phones.

The notifications are not the same as we see in other phones, you will not get icons of the applications with notifications on the notification area, instead you have to pull down the drawer to check the notifications. Well this got me missed many notifications. Also, the notifications comes floating on the screen not matter what application you are using.

Using Cardboard was a pleasant experience thanks to Full HD display and a series of sensors which work perfectly on VR cardboard.

The 3080 mAh battery lasts more than a day and is again over whelming knowing a very few Android phones managed to provide satisfactory battery backup to that level.

Camera:

The department I love the most on this device is its Cameras , yes both cameras (rear and front) does their job pretty well and results are brilliant.

The rear camera captures detailed photographs with very less focus time, low light imaging remains average but when it comes to well lit environment the device is capable of producing some stunning photographs.

Some samples are below.

Conclusion:

Mi 4 is one of the best built Android Smartphones design of which is inspired from Apple's iPhone 5. The smartphone comes with stunning display, very good battery backup, usable camera and efficient hardware which makes it a desirable phone. However, it is only advisable to buy if you can sacrifice 4G support and NFC, well you can also wait for Mi5 which will sport 4G and NFC both but Xiaomi Mi5 Price will be significantly higher. MIUI 6 is efficient but personal preferences should be taken care while short-listing a smartphone. Well

YU Yunique Features, specifications and Review

YU Televentures recently launched its 4th device in row the YU Yunique. Yu Yunique is company's effort to bring 4G device at an affordable price. The device is said to be world's most affordable 4G smartphone with HD screen. Other than this the device brings memories of Canvas Spark back to the mind with  its rest of the configuration and price tag of Rs 4999/-. The device runs on a quad core processor however we were expecting an octa core device from YU before launch event as octa core mobile prices are dropping in the market but at this price point it's  fine to be quad core.

"India is at the tipping point of digital revolution and we expect 4G technology to push internet usage to an unprecedented level." - Rahul Sharma, Founder Yu Televentures
Yu Yunique

Yunique runs on 64 bit Snadpdragon 410 quad core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz with Adreno 306 for graphics, sports 4.7 inch HD IPS  display with a pixel density of 312 ppi which is really impressive at this price point. The smartphone comes with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB ROM which can be further expanded upto 32 GB using micro SD card. Yunique supports dual sim and is powered by 2000 mAh battery to last the day.

On camera side, the device comes with a 8 MP rear auto focus camera and 2 MP camera on front. The device runs on Android 5.1 lollipop unlike its predecessors from YU which comes preloaded with Cyanogen OS. The company is giving option to its users to download and install Cyanogen OS if they want to , which is a welcome move as Cyanogen OS is considered to be a OS designed for geeks and many buyers of Yunique would like to stay with stock Android.

Another trend has been broken this time for YU as Yunique will be available exclusively on Snapdeal, whereas previous phones from the company were exclusive to Amazon India.

Design:

If you are familiar with Yuphoria the device touted as "Miracle in metal" by YU, then you just strip it of the metal and replace it with black plastic and matte finish. The Yunique follows the symmetrical design style of Yuphoria where in the audio jack at top, the earpiece and mic on the front and usb charging slot at the bottom all are in straight line placed at the center of the width. The left is void of any buttons and right side houses volume up, power and volume down buttons in same order as written.

Yunique Side View

Front side is dominated by 4.7 inch HD IPS display, On top there is a ear piece situated at center and just below that you can see the YU branding , left side houses the front 2 MP camera and an array of sensors is placed nearby. On bottom there is no physical or capacitive button and just a microphone at the edge of the front side.

Turning back the device you first thing you will notice is the unique Saturn ring design which houses a camera at the centre and LED flash light fitted on the rings. Moving down further near bottom there is YU branding below which you can see the speaker grill. Removing the plastic cover reveals two SIM card slots, and a micro SD card slot, a 2000 mAh battery. The battery is not removable though.

Performance:

The mobile does well in terms of performance, specially when we look at the price point. Multitasking capabilities of phone are good, we ran Antutu Benchmark test on the phone using v5.7.1 and got an overall score of 19105. The score looks good for average user, the device was able to handle normal usage games but we doubt the same would happen in case of resource extensive games such as Asphault 8.

Battery did lasted around 15 hours with a run of Antutu benchmark, around half an hour of video playback, few shots with camera. The camera of the device is just average and don't expect any great quality images especially in low lights same goes for front camera. One other issue we observed with the unit we got was heating problem, the device is getting heated very quickly while normal usage.

Verdict:

YU Yunique is today, what Micromax Canvas Spark was in market 4 months back. The device packs decent hardware for the price tag of Rs 4,999/- but failed to impress us as Canvas Spark did (blame it to camera and thicker edges). So, if your budget is around 4,999/- and you are sure you want to go for 4G connectivity then you don't have any better option as of now in the market otherwise Canvas Spark is still available online.

5 Reasons why Micromax Canvas Spark made it large for the company

Launched 2.5 months ago, Micromax Canvas Spark has done what was expected by the entry level phone for the company. Micromax has managed to sell over half a million Canvas Spark devices through online sales exclusive on Snapdeal, thus the phone has generated over Rs 2.50 billion revenue for the company despite being priced humbly at just Rs 4999/- . So what are the top 5 factors that contributed to this huge success of the phone as we think, take a look.

5. All what is needed:

The smartphone does not boast of best specifications available in the market but what it offers is what is needed at the price point or even more. The essentials are kept intact which is normal for mid range phones now a days like dual Sim, qHD display, 8 GB ROM,  1 GB RAM all these when competition often sacrifices one or many of these to achieve the low prices.

Canvas Spark 5

4. Latest Android :

Micromax launched Canvas Spark running on latest Android 5.0, Micromax is not known for updating its devices with latest Android version. One of the most popular phones of Micromax, the Canvas HD never saw itself running on Android Kitkat. When you are not good at updating frequently but launching the device with the version just launched in market saves you for at least 8-12 months and for the customer you add value which they want.

Canvas Spark

3. Camera Capabilities:

Canvas Spark comes with 8 MP AutoFocus Camera with flash at rear and 2 MP front camera , the camera is supported by Largen lens and OV sensor 8858 a combination rarely seen in other budget smartphones. I have a friend who has bought Canvas Spark as his first Android phone (and the first smartphone) he seemed to be very happy with the phone especially the camera part as the cameras do their job nicely and that's exactly what Micromax wanted , target the first time buyers and make them happy.

2. Corning Gorilla Glass 3

This is something special Micromax has done, the deal with Corning has made it possible for them to use the mighty Gorilla Glass 3 which was till now seen only in flagship phones. The Corning Gorilla Glass adds durability and improves scratch resistance. Again a value add which no other company has managed to do so far.

Canvas Spark

1. 3G under 5K

Micromax offered all good specifications in a phone that is capable of 3G connectivity. We were at the launch event of the phone when Micromax CEO Mr Vineet Taneja accidently ran a few slides ahead and we read the price as Rs 6999/- we all thought that the price is revealed before it was intended to and I even tweeted about same, however 2 minutes later a lot of drama happened and the final price for the device was just Rs 4999/- ( I had to eat my words and remove the tweet). The fact that a phone which comes with all mid level specification and gives 3G connectivity for just 4999/- Rs went well with the customers be it first time buyer or someone looking for a phone for his/her parents Canvas Spark stood as the perfect choice for these 2.5 months and is still one of the best phones available for the price.

OPPO Joy 3 launched in India for Rs7990

Premium smartphone company OPPO from China has launched its budget smartphone Joy 3 in India for Rs 7990. OPPO smartphones are known for their good looks, design and camera capabilities; OPPO Joy 3 is no different claims company despite of it being a budget phone. What device actually has in it to offer let's check out.

OPPO Joy 3
OPPO Joy 3

OPPO Joy 3 is dual sim 3G smartphone, which runs on 1.3 GHz Quad core supported by 1 GB RAM, On Memory front device comes with 4 GB ROM which can be further expanded up to 32 GB, Joy 3 comes with 5 MP FF primary camera and 2 MP secondary camera. The smartphone runs on Color OS 2.0.1 based on Android 4.4. Smartphone weighs just 135 gm and will be available in white and grey colour. The phone is fuelled by a 2000 mAh strong battery.

We doubt if Joy 3 will give as rich experience as other smartphones from the company owing to its 5 MP Fixed Focus camera which is way too low as per current norms, however the imaging technology behind the scenes is still same. The camera is powered by OPPO's unique Pure Image 2.0+ core imaging technology with different inbuilt settings using which the users can get more rich photographs.

We have used Color OS for quite a long time and we loved the tweaks made to stock android. The off screen gestures makes it effortless to wake up the device, play or pause music, launch camera or flashlight. The messaging app also gives feature to close or delete or reply to a new message which comes in very handy and helps you keep your inbox clean.

Commenting on the launch of Joy 3 Mr. Tom Lu, CEO, OPPO Mobiles India said “OPPO Joy 3 is a successor of Joy Plus which combines appearance, fine camera quality at an affordable price. The device offers endless possibilities and enjoyment to the consumers both in rural and urban India. Indian market is our top most priority and we want to launch models across categories which combine style, technology and design.”

Why ASUS Zenfone2 should be in your wishlist for next smartphone

ASUS India launched Zenfone 2 after huge success of Zenfone series phones this year. We have done Asus Zenfone2 review and were amazed what phone has to offer for the price range. Half the year is already passed and Zenfone 2 is among the best phones launched this year so far. So if you are planning to buy a new phone, this phone definitely deserves your attention and we will give you reasons for that.

Massive RAM: First thing first, the phone's USP is its RAM. Zenfone 2 is the first and only (so far) smartphone to have 4 GB RAM. More RAM you have more you can do multitasking with your phone, and expect no lag while playing those heavy games.

Incredible Design: ZenFone 2 is beautifully crafted with ultra thin edges measuring just 3.9mm, the curve design from back makes the phone easy to handle despite of its size. The left and right edges are bare and volume rockers are placed at back of the phone sporting unique ASUS concentric circle design and of course the back cover has metallic finish with thin hair line making the device look more premium and stylish than ever.

Screen to body ratio: ZenFone 2 comes with a 5.5 inch full HD IPS display but due to its thin bezels the device is almost the size of a 5 inch smartphone with 72% screen to body ratio that means no wastage of space.

ASUS ZenFone2
Power packed performance: ASUS Zenfone2 is powered by a 2.3 GHz 64 bit Intel Atom processor, supported by 4 GB dual channel RAM and supports LTE Cat 4+ for download speeds up to 250 Mbps.

Latest Android OS: ZenFone 2 runs on Android Lollipop based Zen UI with multiple user options, the tweaks done by ASUS to the stock OS are really helpful, for instance if you feel its hard to handle the phone with one hand then you can switch to one hand mode and customize the size of display in which you want to work. The software also comes with multiple privacy features to hide your contacts, files, images and other data from all other users.

Camera that you will Love: Zenfone 2 comes with a 13 MP rear shooter supported by dual colour LED flash lights and 5 MP camera at the front. Different inbuilt camera mode will suit most of the real world situation and are optimized with the best settings, however if you are a master of photography than the manual mode gives you all the control and use it as any other professional camera. During our review we have experienced the Pixel Master 2.0 software and hardware combination of Zenfone 2 are one of the best in the industry.

Glove Touch Response: Do you find it difficult removing your gloves every time when you want to use your phone in extreme cold? Then Asus Zenfone2 is a life saver, the glove touch mode makes the screen even more sensitive and can detect touch when your gloves are on.

Fast Charge Technology: The phone is powered by a massive 3000 mAh strong battery to give juice to your device for longer hours. The boost master charging technology makes the battery level charge from 0 to 60% in just 39 minutes. So longer backup less charging time, isn't that cool?

Apart from above mentioned points, you will love the improved Zen UI, security features, personalisation of screens, transition , snap view, kids mode and to make it more fun there are some cool accessories out there in market which includes ZenFlash, LolliFlash, ZenEar and ZenPower

Canvas Spark Variants
Canvas Spark Variants

Micromax Canvas Spark comes in two color variants one is white & gold and second is Black & Grey, On the front side we have 4.7 inch qHD IPS display which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, on top of screen we have the earpiece in the center and front camera & proximity sensor one on each side of ear piece. On bottom we have usual three capacitive buttons viz. multitasking , home and back button from left to right.

Sides of the phone are fitted with metallic rim , left side of phone is left blank while right hand side features power button and volume rockers. On top edge there is a 3.5 mm audio jack and charging slot and mic are placed on bottom edge of the phone. Back side of the phone sports 8 MP rear camera with a led flash light placed just below the camera and below that is placed Micromax logo. Speakers are placed at bottom of the back.

Removing back cover reveals two mini sim slots and a slot for SD card, there is a battery of 2000 mAh but it is not removable.

We found the phone pretty responsive during our usage. Vineet, CEO of Micromax informed us that Micromax has a separate team working on improving camera performance and Canvas Spark just proves that, Images we took from this device were pretty good when compared to other Micromax devices.

Verdict:

For the specifications offered at a price of 4999/- we cant complaint against anything. Canvas Spark is only phone which runs on Android Lollipop, comes with 8 GB ROM and supports 3G in this price range. On performance front phone looks good but more can be said when we spend some more time with review device. If you are a person who wants to get connected to faster internet world with a decent hardware support for apps you are going to run but on tight budget then this is the definite phone for you.

More images of the device are given below, will be back with a detailed review till then stay tuned.
