Flipkart is back with big billion day sale, but its app only this time

India's leading online retailer Flipkart has  announced dates for its Big Billion sale which will be a four days affair this year unlike last year's Big Billion Day Sale which was hosted only for one day and drew a lot of flak from customers and online community for outage, poor handling of volume of visitors, giving discount on hiked prices etc. This year it will also be app only sales which will disappoint many users.

Big Billion Day Sale - 2015

Last year we got a mail from the founders regarding the big sale and a good reason to why it was held on 6th of October as the duo started working in a flat numbered 610 on Flipkart and to mark that day it was decided to have it on 6 October (10). However its not big billion day but big billion days sale and will span across 5 days as mentioned earlier. We still didn't understand the rationale behind the dates and number of days when the first such event was explained in a detailed manner.

The sales also coincide with start of festive season in India, as per the press customers can shop across range of categories including fashion, electronics, jewellery, toys, laptops, furniture etc during these five days. Myntra will also be part of this sale and will be presenting a curated selection from iconic fashion brands at never before offers said the release.

Announcing ‘Big Billion Days’ shopping festival, Mukesh Bansal, Head of Commerce Platform, Flipkart & Chairman – Myntra, “India shops the most during this time of the year. With over 75% of traffic coming via mobile, we expect this app only sale to be the biggest shopping event of the year. Bigger and better as compared to last year, we have worked towards ensuring a seamless shopping experience for our customers. We have also ramped up our technology and supply chain support to ensure all our 50 million customers have the best ever mobile shopping experience. Infact, to cater to the massive customer demand; we have opened new fulfillment centers across the country to guarantee efficient delivery. We are also happy that Myntra will be participating in ‘Big Billion Days’ to make our customers experience better this year.”

With that said, we feel going app only for such a big sale can irk your 25% of customer base many of whom believe in researching on different websites before buying anything in hurry in name of huge discount pressured by limited time offers. Mr Mukesh Bansal said that they have ramped up their technology and are fully prepared with logistics support , hope this works well this year for the users as well as the company and Flipkart doesn't gain any negative publicity. By the way old saying says, no publicity is bad publicity right?

When someone 'Ping' while they shop you know they are Shop'Ping' on FlipKart

India's leading online retailer 'Flipkart' yesterday launched one of its kind service named 'Ping'. As the name suggest its an interactive feature that lets users to create their own shopping group within the Flipkart app to discuss among the group members about any product available on the store, the service has interesting use cases and is truly innovative idea converted into reality, the feature is developed solely and purely by Flipkart in India and that gives us another reason to fellow Indians to be proud of having Flipkart.

   "Shopping is primarily a social activity and going for it with friends and family has been the norm since time immemorial. Online shopping, on the other hand, has largely remained a solo experience. ‘Ping’ aims to transform online shopping by allowing users to talk to each other real time in order to make decisions and decide on what to buy!” said Flipkart’s Chief Product Officer, Punit Soni

Flipkart Chief Product Officer - Mr. Punit Soni

Since the time I was exposed to internet one of the best things that has happened to me is Flipkart, this Indian startup has done what no other company had done earlier. Flipkart made us comfortable doing online shopping and reached to millions of customers with services like Cash on Delivery and 30 Days return guarantee with no questions asked. Ecommerce industry in India we see today owes much to companies like Flipkart. Flipkart seems to keep up the expectation and is certainly a leader on its own.

The new service from the ecomm giant is no marketing gimmick it is pure technology and excellent use case solution. So far we see online shopping as a convenience where in we don't have to stand in queues, no going out, no walking from counter to counter , shop to shop but did we ourselves ever thought what we are missing doing all the stuff online? Perhaps most of us didn't and just enjoy the convenience it offers sacrificing the core happiness of shopping but Flipkart did thought about that is here with a real working solution that not only solves this problem but also gives you lot more than what you would have expected.

So what it is all about?

Let's start with an offline shopping scenario, what you do when you visit a shop or mall physically? First thing, you most probably go with a friend, relative or with a group; you look for various options available, you select something, you buy it ? No.. you ask for opinion from the people around you isn't that obvious, and after lots of discussions about your choice, their choice , item's price etc etc you finally decides to buy the product. Don't you miss this while shopping online, or how many times you have shared a link with your hubby to tell "hey this top is looking good on flipkart, should I buy it now?" and by end of the day you hear the same response "Oh! aaj to maine FB/Whatsapp dekha hi nahi" (Oh! today I didn't checked FB/Whatsapp). So now you know the problem lets head on to the solution now.

The 'Ping' is a new feature of the app which lets users to select members from their contact list to form a group and start a discussion about shopping. To be clear this is not a social messaging app it is just a feature built within the Flipkart app.  Now you can just long tap on a product and drag to already existing groups and start a discussion on the same. The beauty of the service is that when the member from other side clicks on the product from the 'Ping' it directly opens the same page without searching the product again. Or if you want to buy something for a friend just create a group selecting your other friends from your phonebook and brainstorm on the best possible gift and that will be a perfect place to hide from the friend who is going to receive the gift.

Flipkart Ping

The service doesn't just stop at discussions you can do a lot more with it you can add a product from you recent visited products or wishlist or cart, you can share your screen, share from your gallery or even use your camera to capture something on the fly and start discussing about that, isn't that cool.

Flipkart also launched its image search feature which allows users to take a photograph of the desired item and select category (not required always) and will get all matching products from Flipkart. You can then always narrow down your results based on color, size, price etc.

Something technical

Flipkart's Chief Product Officer Mr. Punit Soni, emphasized a lot on the technical aspects of the feature gave us an insight about what has gone behind the scenes in creating these world class features. For starter the Flipkart app consumes 1/6th of your data as it compresses the content that gets delivered on your phone which gives users who are still on 2G networks similar services as the users on advanced networks experience. The chat feature which involves a floating icon is actually built from scratch as the default apis provided by Android needs version 4.1 or higher to support that feature. When a company invests so much energy and time giving user experience as ultimate priority it really tells what kind of services you can expect from them.

How to get it?

Flipkart has already updated its application, however to use the 'Ping' feature you need an invite which will be released by Flipkart in different phases. Once you get the invite you can further invite 10 of your friends from your phone book and thus the organic growth is what Flipkart is seeking at this point of time.

Have any questions, comments, reviews of the features feel free to comment on the post and we will be happy to respond in our best capacity.

How a simple hack turned $5 Amazon dash into multi purpose IOT device

Amazon recently launched its $5 dash buttons which allows you to order your house hold goods with just a click. These buttons are physical hardware buttons which can be set up to order a particular SKU on Amazon with just a click. The device makes it easier to order household goods like detergents, paper towels, diapers, personal care items etc. One device can be set up to order only one SKU, but CloudStitch CTO Ted Benson had other plans in his mind. He just hacked this petty device and found a way that can make these devices do pretty much everything he wants.

Ted, has detailed in a post on medium.com how he hacked the device to track his child's poops. He mentioned that impressive way to do this would have been to rip open the device  and reprogram it, however being a lazy dad he chose the other option of sniffing his wifi network whenever a device requested for a connection and then record a data point when it hears some.

By this time if you haven't clicked on the link above to see the detailed post, here is a summary of actions how this hack was done.

  • First step is to configure your Amazon dash button as per the instructions provided except the last step where in you are asked to give the SKU of product you want to order. This will ensure that your device connects to your network and is ready to trigger some action when you push the button.
  • Run a small python code written below to sniff your wifi network, to get details when the dash button is connected to wifi.
from scapy.all import *
def arp_display(pkt):
if pkt[ARP].op == 1: #who-has (request)
if pkt[ARP].psrc == '0.0.0.0': # ARP Probe
print "ARP Probe from: " + pkt[ARP].hwsrc
print sniff(prn=arp_display, filter="arp", store=0, count=10)
  • Note down the mac address of devices you connected as shown in below pic.
  • Now modify the above code with the MAC addresses got from the above step.

    from scapy.all import * def arp_display(pkt):
    if pkt[ARP].op == 1: #who-has (request)
    if pkt[ARP].psrc == '0.0.0.0': # ARP Probe
    if pkt[ARP].hwsrc == '74:75:48:5f:99:30': # Huggies
    print "Pushed Huggies"
    elif pkt[ARP].hwsrc == '10:ae:60:00:4d:f3': # Elements
    print "Pushed Elements"
    else:
    print "ARP Probe from unknown device: " + pkt[ARP].hwsrc
    print sniff(prn=arp_display, filter="arp", store=0, count=10)
  • Finally modify your python script's code to do whatever you want. Below is the working demo video uploaded by Ted on Youtube.

Get most out of Amazon Freedom sales this year

Amazon is well known for its quality service and equally good advertisements be it the "Aur Dikhao" ad or the latest one "10 ke baad". The advertisements are so catchy that immediately people get engaged with the brand and that's what the purpose actually is. As India has no Black Friday or Cyber Monday we are actually in a very good position to get the similar level of discounts from different online retailers any time of the year, literally that's the beauty of India a festive nation where festivals don't wait for anything, remember Flipkart Big Billion Day sales it was on 6th October (mind you not 2nd October a public holiday in India). Now a days lesser known websites like shopclues.com is also giving discounts every day in "6 se 9 ki Sale" (the 6 to 9 sale). Amazon India too is gearing up for a big sale this year dubbed as Amazon Freedom Sale. You might think its obvious that Freedom sales is going to be on Indian Independence day i.e. 15th August, 2015 but to disappoint you, you don't have to wait for that either. The sales starts on 10th of August and will be held for three days till 12th August, 2015.

Amazon's has asked to push everything "#10KeBaad" and their advertisement display the same where a father post pones his son's birthday to catch up with the sale.

As we know , during these sales its tedious task to know which item should we buy and what are the best deals among the offers given by the retailer, to help you out here are three tips which we would like to share with you to get most out of this sales.

1. Check hourly deals at start of hour: Amazon.in generally comes up with hourly deals and during such sales these deals lasts for very limited time. To not to miss any great deal check the hourly deals section at start of the hour, set a timer or alarm or whatever you feel like but check it at start if you can't do that , don't complain that the deal you were looking ended so fast.

2. Make a list of items you actually need: Sometimes it might so happen that you engaged yourself in a great deal but the item wasn't really required and on other hand you miss out what you wanted to buy in that very sale offer. So shortlist few items you need, check for their prices before hand and when the sales day approaches you will have better idea what benefits the e-tailor is giving to you. A price alert mechanism is the best friend.

3. Compare the prices and know about deals before hand : Don't let any one fool you in the name of sales, compare the prices and get to know about Freedom Sale deals before hand to be one step ahead from others from price aggregators such as mysmartprice.com .

4. Research on web, shop on App: To promote mobile applications now a days online retailors offer extra discounts on purchase made through their mobile application. So whatever you are buying check on mobile app too for any extra discount to add cherry to the cake.

So are you ready with your wish list, if not then make it now and share your shopping experience with us via comments section to help fellow readers.

Saving Money with Mobile wallet Offers

Remember the old days when the only way to transact was either cash or via cheque? Memories are still afresh when I used to stand in a long queue in bank to withdraw cash. Later getting an ATM card was a huge relief and standing in queues in the bank was no longer required, however, today I find myself standing in an ATM queue :)
Mobile Wallets

Fast forward to current era where most youth has internet access and are moving towards a virtual world of social friends, online shopping and online payments; an ecosystem which facilitates all this with a few simple clicks. The major player in this cyber space development is the e-commerce segment and other segments mostly revolve around it or have become a part of it. One such service is mobile wallets. In December, 2014 RBI directive has allowed mobile wallets to accept deposit, basic saving and provide remittance. This directive also allowed such payment banks to issue ATM-cum-debit cards to access funds, restricted to a max amount of INR 100,000.

What is a mobile wallet?

In simple terms, a mobile wallet is a system where users load money into their mobile wallet accounts and then use it at predetermined group of merchants online without need of exposing the banking details to each merchant. But the functionality is not limited; let’s see what India's top mobile wallets have to offer.
