Philips Lighting introduces LiFi: broadband data through light

Philips Lighting, the world leader in lighting, is now offering Light Fidelity(LiFi), a technology in which high quality LED lighting provides a broadband Internet connection through light waves. As the lighting company for the Internet of Things, Philips Lighting is the first global lighting company to offer LiFi-enabled luminaires from its existing office lighting portfolio.

"LiFi has enormous potential for today's digital age and as the world's leading lighting company we are proud to pioneer new and innovative services for our customers," said Olivia Qiu, Chief Innovation Officer, Philips Lighting.

"While radio frequencies are becoming congested, the visible light spectrum is an untapped resource with a large bandwidth suitable for the stable simultaneous connection of a vast array of Internet of Things devices. Being a lighting company, we ensure that our customers benefit from the finest quality energy efficient light along with state-of-the-art connectivity," she added.

Broadband Internet connection and quality illumination at the same time
LiFi is a two-way, high-speed wireless technology similar to WiFi but uses light waves instead of radio waves to transmit data. Philips Lighting's office luminaires enabled with LiFi technology provide broadband connection with a speed of 30 Mb per second (Mb/s) without compromising lighting quality. With 30Mb/s a user can stream simultaneously several HD quality videos while having video calls.

Icade, the French real estate investment company, is piloting the ground-breaking technology in its smart office in La Defense, Paris. "LiFi has the potential to be a real game changer in offices. As the leader in our market we wanted to explore the possibilities of this technology for existing and future clients. We plan to showcase the technology in our smart office in La Defense, so aside from stable connectivity, light quality is crucial to us," said Emmanuelle Baboulin, Head of the Commercial Property Investment Division at Icade.

Benefits of LiFi
LiFi offers benefits over WiFi as it can be used in places where radio frequencies may interfere with equipment, such as in hospitals, or where WiFi signals cannot reach or are weak, such as underground. Other user cases include environments demanding high security; for example, the back office of a financial institution or government service. LiFi adds an extra layer of security as light cannot pass through solid walls and a line-of-sight to the light is needed to access the network.

How does LiFi work?

Each luminaire is equipped with a built-in modem that modulates the light at speeds imperceptible to the human eye. The light is detected by a LiFi USB key/dongle plugged into the socket of a laptop or tablet (in the future such technology will be built into laptops and devices). The LiFi USB dongle returns data to the luminaire through an infrared link. With Philips LiFi-enabled luminaires, customers get the double benefit of quality, energy-efficient LED light and a highly secure, stable and robust connection as LiFi has 10,000 times the spectrum of WiFi.

Trends to watch for in 2016 from industry experts

One more year has passed by in Information technology era, which brings the dawn of another new year and with it comes the time of speculations, calculations , new energy and new trends. So what will be New Year 2016 like? Let's try to find out with the vision of industry experts.

"Implementation of GST could again be a turning point for the smart device industry and might prove to be a barrier for an easy-India-entry strategy of  a lot of the chinese brands. GST will ensure taxation benefits for focus on distribution and for being present across the breadth of the country.
"- Micromax

Ecommerce has taken a very good shape in yesteryears and innovative solutions are coming up day by day which will make ecommerce accessible to more and more people. With launch of 4G LTE networks in India, more services can be availed with less hassle. From Paypal to Paytm we have come a long way. 2016 is expected witness even more growth on mobile wallets and services where these can be used with. Launch of offline digital cash solution such as PaySe is another giant step towards offline wallets.

India is experiencing tremendous growth in the use of Internet as well as mobile. As per various estimates, there are a just under a billion cell phone connections in India and the country adds around 6 million new cell phones every month in usage. Although the number of Internet users is still low in comparison - around 200 million users, the conversion of cell phone users to mobile users is fast growing. As per telecom industry estimates, 65% of all new Internet users in India experience their first Internet surfing activity via mobile. I anticipate that many players will develop integrated mobile wallet apps, along with the usage of heavy online & offline marketing. In markets with a more advanced payments system, mobile wallets will have to do more than just execute a payment, they will have to add a value proposition beyond payments.” - Pradeep K Sampath, Chief Operating Officer at MMP Mobiwallet Payment Systems Limited

When talking about Ecommerce one cannot simply ignore the use of coupons , deals and comparision websites. Startups for online price comparison have seen a tremendous growth and similar services are expected to grow in 2016. Instead of looking specifications of hundreds of phone its now much convenient to do a simple search on such website for 2gb RAM mobile . A list of mobiles with required specifications with lowest price available helps user to take wise decisions backed by data. Similarly, using coupons and deals available on different platforms certainly saves one from spending too much.

Year 2015 has set an example for 2016 to follow. 2016 will be customer centric year with focus
on capturing each and every click of the user journey. We expect many more exclusive partnerships to get the best discounts for the users. India will overtake the US as the second largest market for smartphones in the world by 2016 as smart mobile devices become affordable, global research firm eMarketer has said. With Government of India’s ‘India Digital Plan’ that promises that by 2019, everyone in India will have a smartphone, the prospects of online shopping is only expected to grow. Overall, we expect to that digital coupons industry will grow 25% in 2016. - Ms Kulpreet Kaur, Co-founder, Shop Pirate Coupons

2015 also saw ecommerce playing on app only strategy but it seems that it didn't went as it was expected. 2016 will be a year of more focus on mobile platform but app only trend doesn't seem to follow at least at this time.

As mentioned earlier 2015 witnessed launch of 4G LTE services in India, and without any doubt 4G smartphones will be the new trend for 2016. Though 4G services have not gained that popularity but coming year is expected to see 4G becoming the common service to access internet among majority of Indian urban population.

With two 4G models from Lenovo featuring in the list of top 10 smartphones sold in 2015, Lenovo certainly emerged as the favourite smartphone brand of the year!
According to #FlipTrends, a year ender report by Flipkart, Lenovo A6000 plus and Lenovo K3 Note were the top two most sought after smartphones in 2015. Motorola closely followed with two smartphones, Moto G 3rd Gen and Moto E 2nd Gen featuring at the third and sixth position respectively. Xiaomi Mi 4i & Redmi Note 4G took fourth and fifth spots followed by Samsung Galaxy On7, Samsung Galaxy J7, Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 and Asus Zenfone 5.

As is the case with increasing mobile applications and penetration of smart phones with internet, the mobile led ecosystem is bound to grow at a faster rate. Brands such as Micromax , bringing affordable 4G smartphones to the market will be playing a major role in this revolution.
“The ongoing trend of affordable smartphones will continue in the coming year as well with expected launch of more mid segment smartphones which will fit the budget and deliver the best in class experience to the customers. The innovative nature of the Smartphone industry has been steadily gaining ground in recent years and in a competitive market, manufacturers look towards providing users with features that give their products the cutting edge. Fast charging, better camera quality, fast data speed/quality and low-cost data connectivity options with introduction of 4G will be major game changers in 2016. At OPPO, we plan to launch 8-10 numbers of handsets in the coming year and are looking at 300% growth with more nation-wide channel partners.” -Mike Wang, CEO, OPPO Mobiles India

The Honorable Prime Minister’s ‘Make in India’ initiative gathered steam this year with not only the domestic manufacturers but also global brands investing hugely in local manufacturing which will further lead to his vision to ensure a smartphone in the hands of every citizen by 2019. Close to 30% of the handsets being sold monthly are manufactured or assembled locally giving a big boost to the Indian handset market as companies are now able to quickly bring the latest technologies to the market in a short span of time.

Within the handset industry, so far Samsung and Micromax have been the flag-bearers of “Make in India” by ramping up domestic manufacturing. In 2016, clearly a lot of additional capacity will come up as Chinese and Indian brands/ODMs drive investments into this space with continued policy incentives. This will be a key driver for new business models to emerge to ensure unit level profitability as operations ramp up. We may also witness the beginning of some key component level manufacturing as global component suppliers evaluate their business viability and setup establishments here.

Mobile led services will become mainstay and mobile internet ecosystem will grow beyond the 150-200 Mn smartphone users driven by a strong collaboration between the device, access and service eco-system. The entire mobile ecosystem will come with the launch of a number of services across sectors like entertainment, travel, healthcare and banking. The coming year will see the entire mobile industry joining hands with an aim to foster a culture of innovation, creating solutions that can take care of indigenous needs and building an empowered ecosystem for permeating technology into the nooks and crannies of the country. The key to this growth will be simplification through relevant services and availability of these in various Indian languages.

With prediction of such growth in Mobile ecosystem it is no surprise that mobile phones will dominate market share in terms of search data and other services.

There’s good reason that mobile demands so much of our mindshare. Few technologic advancements have had such a profound effect on the way we live, work, play and socialize as mobile devices. We are likely to see a big shift in mobile search. With so much data available, and so many past browsing habits to draw from, we are likely to see highly contextualized search results. Results that use help of third-party apps to not just recommend a particular product, but find it in the customer’s preferred color, size, location, price range and much more. Also, mobile payments are on the rise around the globe. I expect this trend to take the mobile Internet by storm in the coming quarters. 360° Video is another trend I am bullish on. It will give users complete control over what they want to view and from what angle. Online shopping is likely to get a complete overhaul, giving consumers a real-time perspective about the products they are going to buy. In emerging markets, burgeoning smartphone and mobile Internet usage will fuel rise of regional and localised apps and games.
While we strived to keep up with breakthroughs in 2015, I expect 2016 to bring in seismic shifts. - Kenny Ye, MD, UCWeb India (part of Alibaba Mobile Business Group)

Implementation of GST could again be a turning point for the smart device industry and might prove to be a barrier for an easy-India-entry strategy of  a lot of the chinese brands. GST will ensure taxation benefits for focus on distribution and for being present across the breadth of the country.

"Smart watches, Health monitors, Fitness trackers- The world of mobile is changing. The wearable landscape got a lot of attention this year, and it has helped fuel more talks about a future where every device or object could be connected. Today, the number of “things” that are connected to the Internet in a home have changed. While earlier, one would have a single desktop computers connected to the Internet, today the number of devices include tablets, laptops, gaming consoles, smartphones, Televisions and more.
IoT will be a game changer and you will be able to see brands step out of their comfort zones, trying newer things. It can open up a new horizon and the possibilities are limitless. What is interesting is that Mobile will be at the center stage of this change. Everything that a user wants, will be and can be controlled through his mobile device. 2016 will be a beginning towards offering consumers this change. " - Rahul Sharma, Cofounder YU televentures

Nucleus Software launches PaySe™ (पैसे) Indian version of Bitcoin with offline peer to peer payment capability

Nucleus Software, the leading provider of lending and transaction banking solutions to the global financial services industry, today announced the launch of PaySe™, which is claimed as world’s first offline digital cash solution by the company, designed and created with an aim to democratize money.

PaySe™ utilizes the latest advances in mobility, big data, open source and crypto currency (primarily tokenization) to deliver the world’s first secure offline peer to peer payment solution.  PaySe™ helps to reduce and offset the costs associated with cash by replacing physical cash notes with digital currency. With fewer notes in circulation, the cost of storing, transporting and processing cash will reduce dramatically.

PaySe
A recent report by ‘National Institute for Bank Management’ and ‘Institute for business in the global context’ on ‘Cost of Cash in India’, showed that the total cost of storing, transporting and processing cash is 22,000 crore INR annually. This cost will only increase as the economy grows unless alternative approaches are used.

However, it appears to be just another cryptocurrency made for Indian markets. For those who doesn't know about cryptocurrency , it is a medium of exchange using cryptography to control transactions and creation of new units.

As consumers have deeply ingrained approaches to using cash, PaySe™ has been designed to mimic cash transactions with easy to use, one press ‘Pay’ and ‘Receive’ functions. PaySe™ will result in a “Less Cash” ecosystem eventually leading to a “Cash-Less” ecosystem for the majority of the financial transactions. By freeing up cash, the solution will facilitate the cost effective delivery of small loans.

“As leaders in lending solutions, we had a vision of making 100 Rupee loans possible and profitable. Conceptualized and patented in India, PaySe™ is developed with a vision to make a daily loan possible for people that are less fortunate.” said Mr. Vishnu R Dusad, CEO, Nucleus Software.
The PaySe™ solution consists of three key components:
1.       PaySe™ Processing System, is the interface between the real world and the digital world in accordance with the regulatory guidelines
2.       PalmATM ™ application allows any smart phone to perform the functions of a conventional ATM including the ability to withdraw and deposit
3.       PURSE ™( पर्स) is a mobile to carry digital money. PURSE™ is designed to pay or receive digital cash

PaySe™ helps address the access challenges faced by banks, micro finance institutions (MFIs) and non banking finance companies (NBFCs) by making basic banking services accessible to the unbanked such as direct debit transfers (DBT), micro pension, saving deposits, loans, recurring deposits etc. while delivering financial services such as:

(i)                  PaySe™ enables offline digital cash and digital banking access to  millions of global citizens who do not own  a mobile phone by delivering a mobile to carry money;
(ii)                PaySe™ empowers a billion ATMs by leveraging the power of a smart phone and the banking infrastructure using industry standard messaging; and
(iii)               PaySe™ reduces the cost of cash by digitizing money

Speaking at the launch Mr. Ashutosh Pande, Founder and Chief Innovation Officer, PaySe™ said, “PaySe™ has been developed to address the requirements of citizens at the bottom of the pyramid. Not only does it have the capability to facilitate online withdrawals and deposits but also enables completely offline usage like cash. PaySe™ will revolutionize the way money is saved, carried and spent. With PURSE, a mobile to carry money, and PalmATM a bank teller application we have delivered the essentials to democratize money.” He further added that, “Democratization of communication drove velocity of information and democratization of money will drive the velocity of cash.”

PaySe™ provides a fully integrated and easy to use digital cash platform for consumers, merchants and banks while adhering to the regulatory guidelines.
For consumers, PaySe™ improves access to banking and insurance products by digitizing money.
For merchants, PaySe™ delivers the convenience of card transactions while retaining its full value like cash.
For banks, in addition to direct benefit transfer (DBT) and micro pension transfers, PaySe™ makes other banking services accessible to the unbanked beneficiaries through the PalmATM™.

The shopping mall of things – a Black Friday in the life of the IoT

The success of Black Friday as the number one date in the shopping calendar is one of the reasons we see less speculation surrounding the death of the high street than we did in 2012 when smartphone ownership tripled. Shopping that required moving about looked set to become a distant memory.
While we have seen examples of some high street retailers closing their doors for good, such as Blockbuster and Comet, bricks and mortar retailers have upped their game and are using technology to their advantage.

This month saw Amazon, the original nemesis of the high street, open its first-ever physical bookstore at University Village, Seattle, after 20 years of selling online only. So, in the age of omni-channel retail, how can retailers use the Internet of Things (IoT) to deliver the ultimate connected shopping experience and gain an advantage at the most competitive time of year?

Keeping things moving

When demand on stock is at its highest, the grip over supply chains needs to be at its tightest. Poor stock and supply chain management leads to customers being frustrated by empty shelves and limited choice – the perfect enticement to try an alternative outlet that can better serve their needs.

Accurate supply chain planning relies on data-driven decision making, which is increasingly generated by connected IoT devices. Capturing and analysing data such as the amount of stock being produced in warehouses, the demand at each outlet, and the time required to get product from the production line to the shelves into one place, is invaluable for supply chain managers.

Using telematics data collected from vehicles in the distribution fleets, logistics managers can see where cargo is and when it will reach its destination. Furthermore, RFID-enabled sensors on products enable advanced product tracking through every stage of the supply chain, giving supply chain managers a micro view of the situation as well as the big picture.

To complete the connected supply chain, in-store IoT connects the front and back of house. We’re all familiar with choosing a shoe from the shelf, asking the assistant if we can try a pair for size, and waiting 10 minutes before he/she returns to say: “We don’t have that size but we have a pair in a different size or in a colour you didn’t ask for.”

Connected customer experiences give the shop floor assistant a live inventory application hosted on a smartphone or tablet, so they can tell you instantly what stock is available and even send a message to request the correct pair is brought out for you to try.

At the point of sale, the live inventory is automatically updated when it receives a message from the checkout transaction. For example, if I buy the pair of shoes, that serial number will be deducted from the store inventory. Using this system, the inventory of each store, as well as distribution centres for products sold online, provides a clear picture of what products were selling best, where, and where supply is needed to meet demand – key information for the supply chain management team. This smarter approach to stock management helps prevent the disappointment of ‘out of stock’ messages online or empty shelves in-store during peak shopping periods such as Black Friday.

Smarter shops, smarter shopping

One of the weapons in an online retailer’s arsenal that bricks and mortar stores struggle to compete with, is the ability to collect and use customer data to target them with deals based on their age, gender, interests, purchasing history and time of year.

In order to deliver a true omni-channel experience, retailers are introducing new technologies that were once exclusive to ecommerce, to entice high street shoppers to their stores and improve their experience when they’ve entered them. John Lewis (in the UK), often synonymous with great customer service, is one retailer that has developed elegant ways of combining the offline and online world. It’s Click and Collect experience, launched in 2008, where customers can order any item online to be delivered to their nearest store free of charge, has proven so popular that it was recently announced the service would be charged for.

Location-based mobile marketing is becoming a powerful tool for retailers. Catalogue retailer Argos’ app tells you the stock levels at the store you are planning to visit to avoid disappointment when you get there and give you the chance to find an alternative store or order online if stocks are depleted.
Meanwhile, BMW Group Research and Technology is looking to combine the future connected car with high street shopping, finding ways of allowing retailers to target drivers with tailored offerings based on their proximity to local stores through car computer systems.

Marrying the offline and online retail experience, therefore, requires communications between stock-rooms, transactions, warehouses and distribution centres and consumers’ mobile devices, vehicles and eyeballs to be occurring all the time.

For this process to provide the seamless interactional experience with retail brands on any channel, at any time, particularly at the busiest time of year, the infrastructure underpinning the IoT, Wi-Fi and mobile messaging ecosystem needs to match the intelligence and sophistication of the systems involved.

How a simple hack turned $5 Amazon dash into multi purpose IOT device

Amazon recently launched its $5 dash buttons which allows you to order your house hold goods with just a click. These buttons are physical hardware buttons which can be set up to order a particular SKU on Amazon with just a click. The device makes it easier to order household goods like detergents, paper towels, diapers, personal care items etc. One device can be set up to order only one SKU, but CloudStitch CTO Ted Benson had other plans in his mind. He just hacked this petty device and found a way that can make these devices do pretty much everything he wants.

Ted, has detailed in a post on medium.com how he hacked the device to track his child's poops. He mentioned that impressive way to do this would have been to rip open the device  and reprogram it, however being a lazy dad he chose the other option of sniffing his wifi network whenever a device requested for a connection and then record a data point when it hears some.

By this time if you haven't clicked on the link above to see the detailed post, here is a summary of actions how this hack was done.

  • First step is to configure your Amazon dash button as per the instructions provided except the last step where in you are asked to give the SKU of product you want to order. This will ensure that your device connects to your network and is ready to trigger some action when you push the button.
  • Run a small python code written below to sniff your wifi network, to get details when the dash button is connected to wifi.
from scapy.all import *
def arp_display(pkt):
if pkt[ARP].op == 1: #who-has (request)
if pkt[ARP].psrc == '0.0.0.0': # ARP Probe
print "ARP Probe from: " + pkt[ARP].hwsrc
print sniff(prn=arp_display, filter="arp", store=0, count=10)
  • Note down the mac address of devices you connected as shown in below pic.
  • Now modify the above code with the MAC addresses got from the above step.

    from scapy.all import * def arp_display(pkt):
    if pkt[ARP].op == 1: #who-has (request)
    if pkt[ARP].psrc == '0.0.0.0': # ARP Probe
    if pkt[ARP].hwsrc == '74:75:48:5f:99:30': # Huggies
    print "Pushed Huggies"
    elif pkt[ARP].hwsrc == '10:ae:60:00:4d:f3': # Elements
    print "Pushed Elements"
    else:
    print "ARP Probe from unknown device: " + pkt[ARP].hwsrc
    print sniff(prn=arp_display, filter="arp", store=0, count=10)
  • Finally modify your python script's code to do whatever you want. Below is the working demo video uploaded by Ted on Youtube.
