Flipkart introduces ‘Back to College’ program to offer an enhanced learning experience to students

Flipkart, India’s homegrown e-commerce marketplace, has introduced a Back to College program to facilitate the educational needs of millions of students as they begin their classes virtually this year. Under the program construct, Flipkart is making available a wide selection of computing devices and bundled education content through tie-ups with leading edtech players including Edukemy and Simplilearn. As part of the initiative, over 400 courses across coding, AI and competitive entrance examinations will be available to students among a plethora of learning choices. This initiative aims at enhancing the learning potential of students as digital learning takes precedence.

As students prepare to move into a new academic year, the “online learning” scenario, triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, continues to lead them to upgrade their education essentials with the best computing devices to make their learning process more intuitive and impactful. As part of the nearly 3-month initiative which started in June, Flipkart has curated a special page on the platform to help students select the right computing and electronic items such as laptops, tablets, printers, audio devices and IT peripherals along with online learning materials depending on one’s primary use case. As part of the campaign, students looking for laptops and tablets will receive options post purchase to pick relevant courses from the edtech partners in an affordable manner.

Students can now get learning modules from leading edtech companies along with their purchase of laptops and tablets during the 3-month long campaign

Rakesh Krishnan, Senior Director, Electronics at Flipkart, said, “As students get ready for the new academic year and are now better acquainted with virtual learning, we are closely working with our brand partners to bring the best-in-class computing products, combined with courses and content to enhance their learning experience. With nearly 40-45% of the demand for electronics coming from the student community and the significant rise in the adoption of online learning since last year, the industry is now shaping its offerings to cater to this fast-growing customer segment and bring various interventions. Through our “Back to College” program, students will benefit from the wide variety of courses offered by partners along with a large selection of computing devices available on Flipkart that will cater to their diverse needs and support them in choosing the best learning materials available.”

In the past year, the demand for computing devices including laptops and tablets has grown multifold, as students switched to learning from home on the back of the pandemic. Interestingly, while school students prefer to purchase budget laptops, college students are looking for premium options to undertake complex tasks which require high processing power.

At the same time, online education offerings for classes 1 to 12 are projected to increase 6.3X by 2022 from the base of 2019," according to an industry report*. It added that the post K-12 market is expected to grow 3.7X to touch $1.8 billion.

Flipkart’s customer insights also corroborated a growing demand for online learning materials among the customers of computing devices. Earlier in April, Flipkart partnered with Codingal, Avishkaar, Prograd and Vendantu to offer online courses for school students and witnessed good traction among customers.

To better cater to the students’ needs, Flipkart also introduced its Student Loyalty Program with wide-ranging benefits. Students will have to sign up on the electronics page on the Flipkart app using their student identification card and after verification, they will be eligible for 3 months of Flipkart Plus membership along with a host of other benefits on the purchase of electronics, gadgets and backpacks.

Flipkart's Big Billion Day sale Day 1 sold over half a million products within one hour

In 2012 Google came up with GOSF (Great Online Shopping Festival) with an aim to promote online sales and partnered with ecommerce portals to offer heavy discount for one day. Now you don't have to wait for that one day since October 2014, Flipkart announced its first Big Billion Day sales. The success of the sales can be assessed with the fact that other Big e-comm portals have also started offering huge discounts at same time as Flipkart. 2016 Big Billion Days sale from Flipkart is third edition of the hallmark sales event from the firm and is expected to break all previous records as first hour of the first day surpassed half a million products.

FlipKartBBDSale

Kick-starting day one of ‘The Big Billion Days’, Flipkart announced that it sold over half a million products within one hour on Day 1 of the sale.

With massive participation from customers from across the country, the sale witnessed the highest number of concurrent users in 5 minutes of going live. This was 10 times more than any given day, making it the highest ever in the history of Flipkart.

Within the electronics and gadget category, we sold more Apple watches in 10 minutes than the total sale of Apple watches online and offline in a month. TV’s are flying off the shelves, with a number of large size (40 inch and above) LED TVs sold in 6 hours already higher than the total number of TV’s sold during The Big Billion Days 2015. Over 40% of customers who shopped for home appliances availed product exchange. Myntra also had a blockbuster sale on day 1, clocking 3 times more revenue in the first hour compared to 2015 edition of Big Billion Days..

Upon hitting this milestone, Kalyan Krishnamurthy, Head, Category Design Organization, Flipkart said, “The Big Billion Days, like every year, has now set a new landmark in the history of commerce in the country. What makes it special is that the number of units sold in the first 6 hours of sale surpassed the total units sold in a day during the first day of The Big Billion Days in 2015! It’s a matter of immense delight to see this response from our consumers, inspiring us to make it even more special over the course of next 4 days of this sale.”

Flipkart introduces India’s first online ‘No Cost EMI’ option with truly zero cost on Financing

Flipkart has introduced ‘No Cost EMI’, a simple and easy financing option for its online buyers. This move is targeted towards making online shopping affordable for high ticket size purchases through an attractive financing option of Equated Monthly Installments (EMI) where customers won’t bear additional cost.

Flipkart No cost EMI
Flipkart No cost EMI

Flipkart’s No Cost EMI entails zero processing fee, zero down payment and zero interest for customers. Unlike offline offerings, where customers need to make a down payment and pay a processing fee to avail interest free schemes, Flipkart’s offering has no such hidden costs. Flipkart has partnered with Bajaj Finserv and key brands to create this offering which is available for select products and sellers for now. The offering comes with loan tenures starting 3 months up to 12 months.
Mayank Jain, Senior Director and Head of Digital & Consumer Financial services, Flipkart says, “Less than 1% of Indians have access to credit cards, and the traditional banking industry has been slow in addressing the need for small personal loans. This is the first step towards making shopping truly affordable for masses online and brands have shown great enthusiasm to collaborate with us. This has the potential to disrupt online shopping just like we did with Cash on Delivery a few years ago”.

Getting access to small ticket loans for shopping needs is challenging and the process is often very cumbersome for Indian consumers currently. The latest offering from Flipkart will definitely address this issue and will enable shoppers to make their purchases on easy EMIs with a seamless online experience.

Solving fundamental problems in e-commerce has been the DNA of Flipkart wherein the company has created solutions around key needs of Indian consumers. With the introduction of No Cost EMI, Flipkart has enabled more people to get access to products they aspire for. This is the first in a series of consumer finance offerings that Flipkart intends to launch over the course of the year. Together with existing programs like product exchange and assured buy-back, Flipkart is gearing to be the most affordable shopping destination for Indian consumers.

Rahul Sharma launches YU Yunicorn

The YU Yunicorn was launched today in an event held in Delhi, where tech media, bloggers and Fans were assembled to witness the launch. Rahul Sharma, Co-Founder Micromax as usual tool up the stage but shocked everyone with his first slide which read Rs 19,999/- . The presentation than had its own elements of hardware, software and services embedded in the device Operating System which is developed by Bangalore Team and named Android on Steroids (AOS) , however as expected there was some drama involved in revealing the actual price of the phone which is Rs12,999/- for first month and after that it will be available for a price tag of Rs 13,499/- . Registrations are open for the first sales which will happen on June 7, 2016 2 PM onward. As the event promised we have also revealed the price first and now let's talk about the device. Yunicorn will be made available on offline channels as well along with the Online partner Flipkart.

YU Yunicorn runs on a Helio P10 octacore processor from MediaTek which is supported by 4GB of RAM well this combination alone makes any smartphone capable of handling heaviest of tasks smoothly, here in Yunicorn the company has worked very well on its version of Android which is based on Android Lollipop 5.1 and named "Android on Steroids". The custom OS is very close to stock Android and surprisingly free from Bloatware. However YU Televentures has done a great job in integrating services of their partners or acquired organisations very well into the Around YU 2.0 , with Around YU you can access to various shopping portals, book cab on Ola and Uber (you can compare the prices instantly), order food and lot more without even installing a single app on your smartphone. Well that's some innovation for me from the company which really solves the problem of unnecessarily keeping less used applications on the device all the time.

Yu Yunicorn

On Camera department, the phone comes with a 13 MP rear camera, and 5 MP front camera in our first impressions we found both the cameras to be responsive and rendering good quality images however the test was done in well lit conditions. This landmark follows the SimilarWeb report that ranked Flipkart as India’s numero uno shopping app with 47% of the share of visits. In the SimilarWeb report, the combined traffic share of Flipkart and Myntra stood at an overwhelming 63%. Amazon was in the third position with 15.86% followed by Snapdeal with 13.84%.

Apart from regular ecomm stuff, Flipkart is also known for its innovative initiatives such as image search, Flipkart Ping which gives the application an edge over its competitors.

The Morgan Stanley report on Ecommerce in India for 2016 has placed Flipkart as the undisputed number one ecommerce company in India with a dominant market share of 45%. According to the report, Flipkart’s market share of 45% is equivalent to the combined market share of the next three players (Snapdeal, Amazon and Paytm). Interestingly, Flipkart is the only e-commerce company to report a gain in market share from the 2015 Morgan Stanley report to the 2016 report. The market share of Snapdeal declined from 32% to 26% while that of Amazon went down from 15%  to 12%. Flipkart’s market share showed an increase from 44% in 2015 to 45% in 2016.

Flipkart is back with big billion day sale, but its app only this time

India's leading online retailer Flipkart has  announced dates for its Big Billion sale which will be a four days affair this year unlike last year's Big Billion Day Sale which was hosted only for one day and drew a lot of flak from customers and online community for outage, poor handling of volume of visitors, giving discount on hiked prices etc. This year it will also be app only sales which will disappoint many users.

Big Billion Day Sale - 2015

Last year we got a mail from the founders regarding the big sale and a good reason to why it was held on 6th of October as the duo started working in a flat numbered 610 on Flipkart and to mark that day it was decided to have it on 6 October (10). However its not big billion day but big billion days sale and will span across 5 days as mentioned earlier. We still didn't understand the rationale behind the dates and number of days when the first such event was explained in a detailed manner.

The sales also coincide with start of festive season in India, as per the press customers can shop across range of categories including fashion, electronics, jewellery, toys, laptops, furniture etc during these five days. Myntra will also be part of this sale and will be presenting a curated selection from iconic fashion brands at never before offers said the release.

Announcing ‘Big Billion Days’ shopping festival, Mukesh Bansal, Head of Commerce Platform, Flipkart & Chairman – Myntra, “India shops the most during this time of the year. With over 75% of traffic coming via mobile, we expect this app only sale to be the biggest shopping event of the year. Bigger and better as compared to last year, we have worked towards ensuring a seamless shopping experience for our customers. We have also ramped up our technology and supply chain support to ensure all our 50 million customers have the best ever mobile shopping experience. Infact, to cater to the massive customer demand; we have opened new fulfillment centers across the country to guarantee efficient delivery. We are also happy that Myntra will be participating in ‘Big Billion Days’ to make our customers experience better this year.”

With that said, we feel going app only for such a big sale can irk your 25% of customer base many of whom believe in researching on different websites before buying anything in hurry in name of huge discount pressured by limited time offers. Mr Mukesh Bansal said that they have ramped up their technology and are fully prepared with logistics support , hope this works well this year for the users as well as the company and Flipkart doesn't gain any negative publicity. By the way old saying says, no publicity is bad publicity right?

When someone 'Ping' while they shop you know they are Shop'Ping' on FlipKart

India's leading online retailer 'Flipkart' yesterday launched one of its kind service named 'Ping'. As the name suggest its an interactive feature that lets users to create their own shopping group within the Flipkart app to discuss among the group members about any product available on the store, the service has interesting use cases and is truly innovative idea converted into reality, the feature is developed solely and purely by Flipkart in India and that gives us another reason to fellow Indians to be proud of having Flipkart.

"Shopping is primarily a social activity and going for it with friends and family has been the norm since time immemorial. Online shopping, on the other hand, has largely remained a solo experience. ‘Ping’ aims to transform online shopping by allowing users to talk to each other real time in order to make decisions and decide on what to buy!” said Flipkart’s Chief Product Officer, Punit Soni

Flipkart Chief Product Officer - Mr. Punit Soni

Since the time I was exposed to internet one of the best things that has happened to me is Flipkart, this Indian startup has done what no other company had done earlier. Flipkart made us comfortable doing online shopping and reached to millions of customers with services like Cash on Delivery and 30 Days return guarantee with no questions asked. Ecommerce industry in India we see today owes much to companies like Flipkart. Flipkart seems to keep up the expectation and is certainly a leader on its own.

The new service from the ecomm giant is no marketing gimmick it is pure technology and excellent use case solution. So far we see online shopping as a convenience where in we don't have to stand in queues, no going out, no walking from counter to counter , shop to shop but did we ourselves ever thought what we are missing doing all the stuff online? Perhaps most of us didn't and just enjoy the convenience it offers sacrificing the core happiness of shopping but Flipkart did thought about that is here with a real working solution that not only solves this problem but also gives you lot more than what you would have expected.

So what it is all about?

Let's start with an offline shopping scenario, what you do when you visit a shop or mall physically? First thing, you most probably go with a friend, relative or with a group; you look for various options available, you select something, you buy it ? No.. you ask for opinion from the people around you isn't that obvious, and after lots of discussions about your choice, their choice , item's price etc etc you finally decides to buy the product. Don't you miss this while shopping online, or how many times you have shared a link with your hubby to tell "hey this top is looking good on flipkart, should I buy it now?" and by end of the day you hear the same response "Oh! aaj to maine FB/Whatsapp dekha hi nahi" (Oh! today I didn't checked FB/Whatsapp). So now you know the problem lets head on to the solution now.

The 'Ping' is a new feature of the app which lets users to select members from their contact list to form a group and start a discussion about shopping. To be clear this is not a social messaging app it is just a feature built within the Flipkart app.  Now you can just long tap on a product and drag to already existing groups and start a discussion on the same. The beauty of the service is that when the member from other side clicks on the product from the 'Ping' it directly opens the same page without searching the product again. Or if you want to buy something for a friend just create a group selecting your other friends from your phonebook and brainstorm on the best possible gift and that will be a perfect place to hide from the friend who is going to receive the gift.

Flipkart Ping

The service doesn't just stop at discussions you can do a lot more with it you can add a product from you recent visited products or wishlist or cart, you can share your screen, share from your gallery or even use your camera to capture something on the fly and start discussing about that, isn't that cool.

Flipkart also launched its image search feature which allows users to take a photograph of the desired item and select category (not required always) and will get all matching products from Flipkart. You can then always narrow down your results based on color, size, price etc.

Something technical

Flipkart's Chief Product Officer Mr. Punit Soni, emphasized a lot on the technical aspects of the feature gave us an insight about what has gone behind the scenes in creating these world class features. For starter the Flipkart app consumes 1/6th of your data as it compresses the content that gets delivered on your phone which gives users who are still on 2G networks similar services as the users on advanced networks experience. The chat feature which involves a floating icon is actually built from scratch as the default apis provided by Android needs version 4.1 or higher to support that feature. When a company invests so much energy and time giving user experience as ultimate priority it really tells what kind of services you can expect from them.

How to get it?

Flipkart has already updated its application, however to use the 'Ping' feature you need an invite which will be released by Flipkart in different phases. Once you get the invite you can further invite 10 of your friends from your phone book and thus the organic growth is what Flipkart is seeking at this point of time.

Have any questions, comments, reviews of the features feel free to comment on the post and we will be happy to respond in our best capacity.
