Refreshed Micromax 3.0 launches flagship devices Canvas 6 and Canvas 6 Pro, promises 15+ other devices launch soon

Micromax is back in the news after months of silence and this time it has return with a bang. Today was one hell of a day for the company, to begin with it all started with the new tagline under the refreshed version of the company dubbed as Micromax 3.0 , whose vision and goal statement is aligned in becoming one of five top global brands, top devices and services company (yes you read it right, Micromax has been investing heavily in many of the startups and this seems to be the right time to leverage their expertise and collaborate with them.), the company also aims to manufacture its devices 100%  in India which stands at 60% currently.

The new version of the company also needs a new punch line isn't it? So we also have a new punch line for the brand which is "Nuts: Guts: Glory" replacing the older "Nothing like Anything". If that was not enough already, a brand new logo ( a slightly modified one from the previous) was also launched and displayed to the media in one of the most dramatic ways , ah! I almost forgot to add the four founders of the Micromax were present on the stage to unveil the new logo, which is ofcourse a very rare event for not only media but also for the employees of Micromax itself which can be testified by the statement made by Mr. Shubhajit Sen as he said, "This is a very special moment for us, as in my career at Micromax I have rarely seen all four founders together". Well we have something cooking in our minds to tell you about it, but let's leave it for some other time for now.

Micromax Founders From L-R Sumeet Kumar, Rajesh Agarwal, Vikas Jain and Rahul Sharma

Well, the statement was made at start of the event that today they will be launching around 20 products which will include 15 smartphones , and other devices includes tablets and LED TVs. However to our relief, today's event was only about what we have discussed above and the next flagship smartphones from Micromax, the Canvas 6 and Canvas 6 Pro.

Quick glance at Canvas 6 and Canvas 6 Pro specifications

Both the smartphones are priced at same price which is INR 13,999/- , Canvas 6 is the first device from Micromax to sport a finger print sensor and full metal unibody design. Created with an insight that an average consumer spends about 15 seconds to pull out the first level of information and 12-14 taps to get to the information, the new personal assistant ‘AROUND’ provides a seamless experience that simplifies and saves a user time and effort to switch between plethora of apps.

With 14 million CRTs in the market, Micromax is looking at making the consumers leap frog to LED TVs to provide better, sharper, smarter cinematic experience in every household. Last year Micromax grew its LED business by 60% and grew 3 times faster than the category. With the aim to constantly bring alive the best experience and connectivity through our multiple screens, Micromax gave sneak preview of its new range of Smart LED TVs- 50inch and 40inch.

Micromax will sell these devices for the first time on its own e-store, you can pre-book the devices from here by paying Rs 1000/- , devices will be available from 20th April.

Before we go into details there are two things which go side by side in this particular device which were not seen earlier, first the device is stunningly beautiful and justifies its beauty with performance second this device is not for masses i.e. Sliver 5 is priced for Rs 17,999/- unlike other recent launches from Micromax which were known for high end specs and low price. For the price part , answering to a question Mr. Vineet Taneja told that specifications can be easily copied and you will be bound to sell the device at much lower price than intended because of competition with same specifications but that's the user experience, look and feel , design which makes the device a whole package along with specifications. Hence, manufacturing a phone with not only good specifications but the best in all other aspects you  need to invest more money and hard work which can only be paid back when you price the end product smartly.

About the device:

Below is a quick first impressions video

The Sliver 5 is runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 1.2 GHz Quad Core Processor backed by 2 GB DDR3 RAM, the body of the device is fortified with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, on display front device sports 4.8 inch HD Amoled display which combines touch sensitivity and helps the device achieve its low thickness. On camera front we have a 8 MP rear camera with LED flash with SONY IMX219 sensor, 4P Largan Lens and Blue Glass Filter enables users to shoot high quality images while the 5MP FF front camera incorporates intelligent beauty mode for clicking perfect selfies with great ease. Device is powered by 2000 mAh strong battery. On memory front there is 16 GB ROM out of which little more than 11 GB is available for end user and this cannot be extended further. Sliver 5 is a single sim device , SIM slot can be accessed from the side edge to insert nano SIM card. For sensors Sliver 5 comes equipped with Ambient Light, Gravity, Proximity, Magnetic and accelerometer sensor.

Commenting on the launch, Mr. Vineet Taneja, CEO, Micromax Informatics Pvt. Ltd. said, “At Micromax, we have been consistently working on the design language of our devices to align them with the evolving needs of new-age consumers, and addressing them before anyone else in the eco-system. Our association with Hugh Jackman for the smartphone truly embodies the aspirational and fearless persona of the brand Micromax.”
He also added, “We are also strengthening our promise of offering great service to millions of Micromax consumers across the country. With Canvas Sliver 5, we are introducing a new challenge for ourselves to build on our commitment for service excellence by offering a 7 day doorstep service policy.”

The Sliver 5 runs on Android 5.0.2 and there is no customization efforts made from Micromax to alter the stock android experience apart from a few settings and UI tweaks to Camera UI.

Tablet, Robot or something else? What Micromax is up to on 18 June

Micromax is launching something big on 18th June, the teasers are floating on social media about new launch. This time it seems to be a different product than Mobile or Tablet. Let's play the guess game till we see the product live at launch event :)

Speculations are that the new product can be a camera or even a Robot, later one is hard to believe but the teasers points to a device with Artificial Intelligence and one is specifically too close to a Robot.

Let's decode the pics shared on social media one by one.

1. #JailBreak: The first in the series is the below pic, with hashtag JailBreak. The first image shows someone prisoned and the message on pic reads "Mystery prisoner found locked in. Can he escape his destiny?"

As soon as we hear JailBreak now a days gadget freak mind just skips the actual Jail break and thinks it of as unlocked/rooted device. We were wondering if Micromax will also sell devices with Cyanogenmod and root access but the YU brand a subsidiary of Micromax already does it, may be it can be a device with stock android and root access. Subsequent hints leads us to a Robot but this is what I feel , we will be seeing on launch event.

2. Touch and Learn:

Second in the series is below image. Which suggests product to be some sort of device which can be used by kids for learning, which again gives strong reason to believe that it is going to be a Tablet launch. The tag line "We touch, we learn" gives more confidence to the bet. Other point to note is that Micromax is partnering with Flipkart and will be available exclusively at online retail giant.

3. We touch. We learn:

Third in series also comes with same tag line as above seems like continuation of second but we have something extra here, the image of a robot present on right bottom corner which makes us deviate from traditional tablet/smartphone in Canvas series.

Teaser 3
4. The final one:

We were just killing time in making guesstimates of what new device can look like or feel like and then we just saw the image below. The Canvas with a fill in the blanks puzzle , we were excited to know that finally we nailed it, its just a new tablet but wait we can fit 'T' and 'A' before 'B' but we don't have enough blanks to fill the last three alphabets 'LET' moreover , a brand already having a number of tablets in its portfolio is very unlikely to name a new tablet just plain 'Canvas Tablet' . Then we connect the dots with the above image and 'ROBOT' fits it perfectly.

We are still not convinced that it will be a Robot, but at least for now we think we have hit the ball in right direction. If you are still wondering what it can be , we will advise you to just sit back and relax, follow us on Twitter and Facebook to know more about the product right from the launch event.

Micromax Canvas Nitro: Price, Features, Specifications and In-depth review

Last year Micromax stormed smart phone market with Canvas HD with quad core processor , Canvas HD created records for online sale on Snapdeal and enjoyed similar success with subsequent smartphones under Canvas Flagship until international players like Motorola, Asus and most important Xiaomi entered with devices at high specification but low on cost. This made mid-range segment for smartphones a tough choice for manufacturers making end customers spoiled by too many choices.

Now Micromax is back with a bang leaving quadcore and hexacore processors and jumped onto Octa-core 1.7 GHz processor from Mediatek in its latest flagship device Micromax Canvas Nitro aka A310.

Does Micromax Canvas Nitro lives upto expectations , will it write another success story for Micromax? Let's find out.

We have Canvas Nitro review unit with us, we will share our experience and findings about the device in detail in this post.

Canvas Nitro sports 5 inch 720p display which is very reflective. Nitro's display comes with an oleophobic coating to prevent it from finger print impressions. On Camera front Micromax has fitted 13 MP Autofocus rear camera fitted with Sony IMX135 CMOS sensor. Canvas Nitro comes with a 5 MP fixed focus front camera equipped with Schott Blue glass filter. On Storage front Nitro comes with 8 GB ROM(5.68 GB available for users) which is expandable upto 32 GB via micro SD card. On sensor front Canvas Nitro is equipped with Gravity , Light and Proximity Sensors.

Specs at a glance:

    2GB RAM
·         12.7cm (5) HD IPS Screen
·         Quick Access App Suite
·         13 MP AF Rear Camera

·         Android Kitkat 4.4.2
8        8 GB ROM
·         32GB Expandable Memory
·         Colors: Mystic Blue, Pristine White·

Look and feel:

We have white version of the device for review but device is available in dark blue color as well. Device weighs 146 gm which looks little heavier than other devices in this segment but as you hold the device, grip is excellent. We found screen is bit reflective which makes it very difficult to view it under sunlight otherwise screen offers wide range of viewing angle and crisp colors indoors. On Front side there is not much to excite and has a plain 5 inch display with three capacitive buttons on bottom viz. Home, settings and back button. Earpiece is placed on top edge to the right of which 5 MP front camera is situated. Micro USB port for charging and data transfer is placed on rear bottom, slight left to it is the microphone. On the right edge device sports a power button at the top and a carving to open back cover at bottom of the edge. On top edge there is 3.5 mm Audio jack, as usual on the right edge Volume rocker buttons are placed.

Back cover is removable on removing it you will see 2500mAh massive removable battery, two micro sim card slots and one microSD card slot. Back cover is made of plastic but has a leather finish instead of glossy plastic or matte finish in other phones from Micromax there is a false stitching on the sides of the cover to make it look more real. Back panel sports a 13 MP camera fitted in  square box above which a small noise cancellation mic is placed, slightly right to the camera is LED flash. Below camera there is metallic Micromax branding logo. Loudspeaker is placed at the bottom of the rear panel.

Camera: Micromax has again proved that greater pixel count doesn't mean greater picture quality but it has improved a lot from other Canvas devices. Despite 13 MP and Sony Exmos sensor device fails to capture images without losing on details. However for normal usage images looks fine but it failed to impress us on that front. Front camera is 5 MP fixed focus camera which is quite good for video calling and taking selfies.

Micromax Canvas Nitro comes with few pre-installed applications on home screen for different shooting modes which are photo (opens camera app in photo shooting mode), Video( opens camera app in video shooting mode), Selfie (Turns on front camera , click on volume rocker to take a perfect selfie), Frontback (Combines front camera and rear camera image into one) and Stable (to capture stable photos in detail).

Apart from  above features camera app itself has several options like Panorama, HDR, gesture to click photo etc.

Software: Micromax has left no stone unturned to make this device fully loaded in all aspects. Canvas Nitro runs on latest Android Kitkat which seems to be mostly the stock version with minimal customization.
Apart from standard Google Apps (playstore, maps, google now, google+,Maps, PlayMovies, Play books, Play Newstand, Play Games, Drive, Youtube, Photos, Hangouts), Canvas Nitro comes preloaded with GetIt app, M!Live, Clean Master, FoneClay, Bookmyshow, Games Club and many other few of them are just links to web pages and few are bloatwares which are not really welcome on my device.

To unlock the device a user can simple swipe up from the lock screen. Lock screen also includes notifications , touching the notification application icon you are directly redirected to that particular notification after unlocking the screen. On swiping right from Home Screen one can view the Quick Look which is a combination of Flipboard and HTC Blink feed which displays news based on categories selected and top stories from your twitter and Facebook accounts.

Performance: We didn't faced any issues while using Micromax Canvas Nitro for any of the activities. Touch response and transitions are smooth and gives user a premium experience. We tried Frontline Commando on this device and didn't faced any issues/lags while playing. Battery performance of device delighted us 2500mAh strong battery lives upto the expectations and delivers what is required. Coming to benchmark scores device managed to get Quadrant score of 13225 and Antutu score of 26886 which only lags behind Xiaomi's Mi3 in this price range.

Canvas Nitro was able to play all kind of videos without any issues which we fed to it. Coming to Audio front loud speakers are not loud enough to be heard in crowded places, however the ear phones which comes with device are of good quality and gives amazing sound experience. Call quality of the device is also very good.

Price: Micromax Canvas Nitro is exclusively available on Snapdeal for Rs12999/- (Box we have has MRP marked as 17K thanks to price war for low price in market :)  )where user can block it whenever they wish to do so unlike Flash sales model of Flipkart and Xiaomi.

Verdict: No doubt that still the best phone in this price segment is Xiaomi Mi3 but given the fact that its sales are closed now, Canvas Nitro is ready to fit into its shoes. Packed with power of an Octa core processor, 2 GB RAM in this device makes it a more sensible choice over its current competitors in market. So if you are looking for a power packed smartphone with longer battery life in this segment then go for Micromax Canvas Nitro.
